Petaluma Quilt Guild Featured Speaker

March 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

I was extremely honored and delighted to be asked to give a presentation on the art of sashiko for the monthly meeting of the Petaluma Quilt Guild. The purpose of the guild is to preserve the heritage of quilt making and to further educate the membership in the art of quilting making. Each month members receive the guild newsletter, Sew Much News, by email. It contains news of upcoming events, programs, retreats, and workshops. The guild has an extensive library for use by its members along with many guild activities. Members are encouraged to share their love and expertise in quilting, and be active participants in the guild.

The guild members were so warm and welcoming; I hope to see them again, perhaps at one of my upcoming sashiko workshops!

Here are a few excerpt slides from my presentation:

mottainai is the Japanese philosophy commonly used to express a feeling of regret when something is put to wasted without its value, tied to the idea that we should express gratitude and respect for all objects, being careful not to waste them.
This slide talks about the links between mottainai, buddhism, shinto, and animism.
This slide features the Sashiko Gals, a group of women in Osuchi Village, rebuilding their lives following the 2011 East Japan Earthquake, using sashiko to create work for themselves.
