Art Walk: Threads That Tie Us

Art Walk is the best time to see the show!

Gallery Hours:
1st & 3rd Tuesdays of each month (2-4 PM)
Saturdays (12-2 PM)
Art Walks Feb 13, March 13, April 10 (5-9PM)

Explore the blurred lines between everyday objects and artistic expression with a focus on fiber and textile art. In this rebellion against the distinction between Craft and Art, we invite you to experience the surprising and delightful diversity of these works, and marvel at the skill, the intuition, the knowledge and wisdom behind making. These fiber artists each create, in their own ways, something new from raw or recycled materials, intuitively and humanely imbuing them with beauty and authenticity.

Photo Embroidery for Chiharu Shiota Exhibit

Two Home Countries is the first solo museum exhibition in the Bay Area by Chiharu Shiota, best known for large-scale installations that fill spaces with densely woven webs of colored fibers. Featuring works from throughout Shiota’s career spanning installation, sculpture, video, drawing, and stage design, the exhibition offers a timely meditation on belonging, impermanence, and living with “in-betweenness.”

The Asian Art Museum will be hosting me for this workshop as part of their public programs in alignment with Shiota’s exhibition. We’ll be working in the multimedia art of photo embroidery.

Embroidery on Clothing

cat embroidered in pocket

ages: 14+

supplies: Bring a piece of clothing to embroider. The rest is on me!

price: $65

Embellish your own clothing with embroidery! Learn techniques for embroidering on clothing to personalize your style. Choose from stick-on wash-off templates or design your own pattern. All you need to bring is the item of clothing you’d like to embroider on.

The best things to embroider will be made of natural fibers like cotton, denim and linen.

Polyester is tricky, so steer clear of anything too slippery, stretchy or fuzzy. If you’re unsure whether your clothing item is suitable for this class, we suggest bringing a backup option just in case.

You’ll learn:

  • How to stabilize and hoop your fabric

  • Design transfer methods

  • Tools of the trade
